Senta German
Senta German, whose fields of specialty are the Greek Bronze and Iron Ages, has over 10 years of excavation experience in Greece, Israel, the American East Coast and Alaska. She recently authored Performance, Power and the Art of the Aegean Bronze Age which was published in 2005.
Dr. German will guide a group through the new Greek and Roman Galleries—a major new addition to the public spaces of Manhattan, as Michael Kimmelman of the New York Times reported. This tour of Hellenistic, Etruscan, and Roman objects in the newly reconstructed and reinstalled galleries will include the "centerpiece of the new installation"—the Leon Levy and Shelby White Court, named after the preemiment New York collectors of antiquities.
Dr. German will discuss the importance of the collections as well as shifting attitudes toward the display and valuation of antiquities exemplified in these galleries. Presented in a style which is largely current with contemporary trends in museum display, these new galleries also reflect an interest in showing the collections in an increasing "decorative" vein. The meaning and motivation behind this practice will be explored within the context of the politics of contemporary antiquities collection.
