"Nostoi: Recovered Masterpieces" Tour with Laura Flusche

NOSTOI TOUR IN ITALIANO CON STEFANO ALESSANDRINI

Organized by the Italian Ministry of Culture, "Nostoi: Recovered Masterpieces" is a glorious exhibition celebrating the return of dozens of ancient Roman, Greek, and Etruscan artifacts illegally exported to foreign markets and acquired by American museums and a prominent private collector in the U.S. Most of these items were removed from archaeological sites, taken out of context reduced to “mere objects of beauty, without a soul.” Following decades of investigation and negotiation, these looted antiquities, until recently on display at institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the J. Paul Getty Museum in California, have finally returned home.

SAFE/Saving Antiquities for Everyone invites you to join one of its special guided tours of the exhibition, where you will learn about the fate of these artifacts and the international efforts underway to protect cultural property and combat the looting archaeological sites in Italy and around the world. You will see frescoes from the Bay of Naples that have been returned to Italy from the Getty Museum in Malibu and the Shelby White collection, the magnificent Euphronios Vase, as well as other vases, bronzes, and sculptures that shed light on Italy’s rich history.

Originally due to close in March, the "Nostoi" exhibition in Rome has been extended until September 7, 2008 due to overwhelming popular demand and will travel to Athens.
