Become an intern

calling-tomorrow's-leaders carouselWe give full consideration to all applicants for all available internships. While we will do our best to accommodate your first choice for internship, this is not always possible. If you are only interested in certain areas, please let us know and we will refrain from considering you for other openings. Currently, all internships are unpaid and virtual, with rare exceptions.

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. However, we recommend you submit applications by the following deadlines:

If you are applying forWe recommend you submit your application by
FallJuly 15th
SummerMay 15th
SpringNovember 15th
WinterOctober 1st

You may submit your application for any particular term at any time. However, if you apply far in advance, you may not be assigned any specific projects until closer to the time when the internship begins. Applications are reviewed periodically. Students can expect to hear back from us within two to four weeks about the status of their application.

Interns are asked to make a minimum of a 10-week commitment to SAFE, during which we expect interns to be available for 25 hours/week. While this is our standard minimum, we will consider special exceptions or alternate arrangements (for instance, 10hrs/week for 15 weeks) on a case-by-case arrangement.

Our internship program is virtual. You will need easy access to a computer to intern with us. This means you can work practically anywhere you choose. Hours are also flexible. Occasionally, interns work with us in the in New York City area where we are based.

Please submit the application form enclosed and answer all questions. Email the application form to Incomplete applications, or queries sent by regular mail will not be considered. In addition:

All applicants are required to submit a sample of their original work. This can be a school assignment, writing sample, research project, web site, design project, or a report—whatever you think will show us your abilities and interests best. Include a short description of the assignment or project requirements. If the sample work is a collaboration, include the names of all other participants, as well as the applicant’s specific role in the project.

Remember, the more you tell us about yourself, the easier it will be for us to design an internship that matches your skills and interests with our needs.

Thank you for your interest in SAFE!
