2008 SAA Ethics Bowl

Thursday March 27, 2008
Vancouver, British Columbia
7:30AM – 2:00PM

At the Society for American Archaeology’s 73rd annual meeting, SAFE was both happy and honored to be a sponsor of the Committee on Ethics’ Ethics Bowl. In its fifth year the Ethics Bowl brings together teams of students from various universities across the country to compete in a fun, debate-style competition that explores the ethics of archaeological practice.

With eight rounds, nine university teams were present; 37 students; 41 professionals serving as moderators, advisers or judges; and close to one hundred people attending the championship event. Read the cases debated here.

SAFE awarded prizes to the winning team, University of California Berkeley, that debated issues relevant to SAFE’s vision and values. We send out heartfelt congratulations to all the finalists who worked so very hard and look forward to posting the winning arguments on our web site soon, allowing members of the public to be more aware of these issues that are so true to SAFE’s mission.

“Do the right thing. It will gratify some people and astonish the rest.”
