The world's cultural heritage is in jeopardy. But unlike other more popular causes, society is still generally unaware of what is at stake. This is why our efforts to preserve the past for our future is a challenge. This is also all the more reason why we need to carry out our mission. To achieve, we need your contributions.

Ways to give

  • Join us now.
  • Give the gift of SAFE to someone you care about.
  • Monthly giving is a convenient and efficient way to provide SAFE with the reliable and steady support we need to focus our resources more on programs than fundraising.
  • Workplace giving maximizes the benefit of your donation, please check to see if the company you work for has a corporate matching
    program.
  • In-kind donations make it more possible for us to realize our goals.

Any contribution you can make, no matter how insignificant it may seem, will make a demonstrable difference.

“The ancient site of Ai Khanoum was for the past 10 years the target of systematically planned illicit digs.... This remarkable city, which bore the distinctive imprint of cultural currents from the days of Greek civilisational glory, does not exist anymore.”

Osmund Bopearachchi, Director of Research, Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, Paris, said in the 2002 article "Vandalized Afghanistan"

Attic-Standard Tetradrachm commemorating the Seleucid king Antiochus II (reign 261-246 BC),
minted during the reign of Diodotus, founder of the Graeco-Bactrian kingdom, circa 250 BC. A unique specimen, unprovenanced, purportedly discovered at Ai Khanoum, northern Afghanistan. Collection: Aman Ur Rahman, Pakistan.

From Pre-Kushana Coins in Pakistan, by Osmund Bopearachchi and Aman Ur Rahman, number 1547.

“As I have become increasingly cognizant of archaeological contexts for my own research, I feel compelled to voice my concerns, particularly for looting that occurs to procure small finds. This type of looting typically receives less press; nevertheless, plundered ‘minor arts’ (coins, rings, buckles, lamps, etc.) are no different than red-figure vases plundered from Etruscan tombs. When
an object is robbed and its context is lost, history is irrecoverably destroyed. Small objects are being looted and smuggled at an alarming rate."
